Skin Care Advice for the Winter Months: 
Best Tips and Treatments
For many people living in certain areas of the country, the cold of winter might leave you with rosy cheeks, but it can also bring sore, rough dryness to the skin – especially on the face, hands and feet.

Two environmental conditions work together to parch the skin during winter: dry, frigid outside air and dry, overheated indoor air. Winter weather won’t change and heat is necessary, but we’ve come up with several soothing skin care treatment tips to ease the most moisture-starved parts on any body.


The natural approach is best, so consider using a hydrating scrub before applying a thick, hydrating cream. Why not whip up an easy-to-make honey and sugar body scrub? They honey reduces inflammation on the skin and sugar gently increases circulation. Adding some pure olive oil and soothing aloe vera gel to the mixture will provide nourishing antioxidants. For seriously dry or scaly skin, opt for a 12-percent lactic acid lotion.


The skin on hands is not only extremely thin, it has very few oil glands. Cold, dry weather can only aggravate already dry skin. Try a hydrating gel or soap-free, alcohol-free cleanser to wash, then apply a thick layer of moisturizing lotion. Slip on a pair of cotton gloves before bed for extra moisturizing help.

Feet need a different approach. Don’t hesitate to exfoliate them, as this will allow a moisturizer to be more quickly and thoroughly absorbed. Choose lotions that contain glycerin or petroleum jelly and stock up on cotton socks. In the morning, your hands and feet will feel smooth and soft again.


If your facial skin is uncomfortably dry, avoid using all alcohol-based products, masks and harsh peels. All of them are designed to remove critical oils from the skin’s surface. Choose instead a mild foaming or milk cleanser, products minus the alcohol and masks that offer deep hydration. Even when using milder products, try to cut your regular usage schedule by half during the winter.


Soaking in steamy tub or shower may feel great after spending the day out in the cold, but that comforting hot water damages lipid barriers in the skin, which can lead to moisture loss. A lukewarm shower using a moisturizing body soap or a bath with oatmeal or baking soda added to it can help relieve dry, itchy skin. Lather on a thick, moisturizing cream or emollient after every bath or shower.
